-
Education
Professionals explain treatment options and help
you understand how you can cope with diabetes.
Utilizing video tapes, books, classes and
support groups, our team of professionals
develops an education plan that is as individual
as you.
-
Meal Planning
Eating healthy is important to all of us, but it
can be significant for those people living with
diabetes. Our registered dietitians are here to
help you make “smart” food choices during meal
planning. Dietitians also will advise you on how
much you should eat and how to get the “most”
out of your meals. Planning a diet that will
contribute to your health and happiness are all
part of the program. Cooking classes are held
monthly for a small fee.
-
Medication
Our educators teach you how the medicine
prescribed by your doctor works in your body and
how it combats diabetes.
-
Self-Monitoring
Professionals show you how to check your blood
sugar and ketone levels. In addition, you will
understand the importance of self-monitoring.
-
Exercise
Professionals help plan your exercise program
and explain how it lowers your blood sugar
level.
-
Stress Management
Stress can take its toll on a body, especially
that of a diabetic. At the Horace C. Polk Jr.
Regional Diabetes Center professionals provide
information about how stress affects diabetics.
Plus information is provided to help you learn

Lufkin Students Take Part in State Diabetes Pilot
Project
Does
a community based lifestyle education program
improve health care status in a group of children at
increased risk for diabetes? That is the question
the Children’s Lifestyle Intervention Program (CLIP)
attempts to answer.
The CLIP study kicked off today at the Lufkin Middle
School with all 6th graders participating in a
presentation by local medical experts and
governmental leaders. State Representative Jim
McReynolds, Dr. Jeffrey Glass, Dr. Lance Sloan, and
Tim Scallon, Director of Clinical Nutrition at
Memorial Health System of East Texas presented
information to the students on how physical activity
and sound nutrition can lead to a healthy lifestyle.
All 6th graders were given arm bands with the words
“Power of Choice” imprinted on them as a reminder
that they have the power to choose a healthy
lifestyle.
Read more about it.
What the viewers are saying about Memorial
Cooking Innovations.
As a diabetic, I think it is extremely useful to
include the exchanges and nutritional
information. Probably a lot of people don’t
notice, but most recipes exclude the sugar
information. I don’t know why because to me
it’s vital to know the sugar amounts. That’s
why I’m so impressed with these Memorial Health
System’s recipes.

I want all the recipes! My husband is a
diabetic and I need to cook carefully, but still
make it taste good or he will just go get fast
foods. From watching all the cooking shows a
little humor is always good. I bet if you asked
Reggie if he enjoys cooking he would say YES!
The public is hungry for REAL people and
something that makes them laugh as well as helps
them in everyday life. The conciseness of the
sharing of the recipes is great and easy to
follow even if you want to write it down. Plus
the Tim Scallon’s nutritional advice is also
very informative and helpful.
