SANE
Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiners
A SANE Nurse (Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiner) is a registered nurse who is specially
trained to provide comprehensive care to the sexual
assault survivor. Additionally, the SANE Nurse has
the ability to conduct a forensic examination to
collect evidence, and the knowledge to testify in
court as an expert witness.
Memorial Health System of East Texas is one of only
a few hospitals in East Texas that offers the SANE
program. Nurses who treat sexual assault victims are
specially trained and certified in this field
through the office of the Texas Attorney General.
Process

All sexual
assault allegations should first go through your
local law enforcement agency. After a report has
been made through the law enforcement agency, a
case number will be assigned to you.

After a case has
been filed, you will be examined by a SANE nurse.
However, if you are in need of immediate medical
treatment, please go to the emergency room
immediately and then contact law enforcement.

A SANE nurse will
examine you. This examination could take several
hours.

Since its inception
in the early 1990s, SANE programs have made a
significant difference in the quality of care
provided to sexual assault victims. Through the SANE
program, victims receive prompt, compassionate care
and comprehensive forensic evidence collection. Not
only does the SANE Program help to preserve the
victim's dignity and reduce psychological trauma,
SANE nurses are enhancing evidence collection for
more effective investigations and stronger
prosecutions.
